Working towards a safer construction industry

Safety performance is a real challenge for Australia’s construction industry. The industry has an obligation to ensure the safety of all workers.

Between 2005-2009 the CRC for Construction Innovation (now the Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre) with John Holland led health and safety-based research projects to address this critical issue. This submission focuses on three main projects: Construction Site Safety Culture; Safer Construction; and Safety Effectiveness Indicators. The highly competitive nature of construction and the national scope of these projects presented significant challenges. However the project outcomes were exceptional with overwhelming endorsement by industry stakeholders nationally.

The application of new knowledge is generating wide-ranging social and economic benefits, including a reduction in workers’ injuries and compensation claims.
