Make it so idea - Charcoal Briquette Production from Dry Organic Waste, India

Waste is a serious issue in India. In Pammal (outer suburb of Chennai), Exnora Green Pammal is an NGO finding ways to make waste make a positive impact through employment and better management.

There is a significant amount of coconut palm fronds, coconut shells and other dry organic waste material collected every day. It has been identified that these material could be transformed into charcoal briquettes.

At the University of Sydney, a student project is working to find ways to turn organic waste material into briquettes for heating and cooking. This process has the potential to be applied to communities in Nepal and India. Currently this is happening on a small scale, but the project aims to develop a process that would be easier, safer and more efficient.
