The selected idea in the 2010 Make it so competition was “Make it so developing communities can re-use their agricultural waste to create energy for cooking and heating.” This idea was lauded for the potential it has to help billions of people across the globe, and there is much being done in this exciting field.
Make it so – celebrating engineers’ ingenuity
The Make it so competition attracted 7,000 ideas, with big issues like renewable energy, climate change and water dominating the entries. One idea, selected by Engineers Australia, would be used to showcase the great work being done by engineers around the world.
Abdul Al-Dasooqi, an undergraduate student at the University of Adelaide, was the author. He was inspired to submit his idea after studying energy proficiencies in bio-gas in his first year at university.
Bio-fuels – the way forward
Bio-fuel is a hot topic across the globe, with teams of engineers already working on ways to solve the problem. From using cow manure to produce electricity to harnessing the hydraulic power of river systems, there are many ways that renewable energy can be delivered to those people living far from the grid.
As these solutions become more economically viable, we can expect to see more communities reaping the benefits of engineers’ ingenuity in the bio-fuel field.
Engineers Australia will now focus on highlighting the many stories that demonstrate engineers’ ongoing work in devising bio-fuel solutions that developing communities can use.
