Engineers Australia is proud to announce that 2011 is the Year of Humanitarian Engineering

A love of maths, science and the environment at school – as well as being drawn to the challenge of solving complex problems – encouraged Kirsty to pursue a career in Environmental Engineering.
A career highlight for Kirsty exemplifies her love of problem solving. As a Project Manager/Engineer, she was responsible for de-flooding acid water resulting from a cyclone from one of Pilbara Iron’s Tom Price mine sites – and had two weeks to do it.
She was responsible for preparing a solution, determining the estimate, attaining approval from London, attaining and managing 24/7 contractor team to implement the works and getting DEP approval to move the acidic water. Despite potential challenges, she managed to get the mine up and running again within two weeks.
