I currently serve two roles- both for love but only one for money. At the UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures, I assist developers, utilities, NGOs and governments with analysis to support cost-effective and sustainable urban infrastructure policy and planning. At Engineers Without Borders Australia, I coordinate the organisation's NSW region which mostly involves making sure all the various technical networks, workplace and university chapters, together with our industrial and community partners are all communicating and working with each other effectively.
I chose engineering as I saw it as the most practical way of making a crust while making a difference in the world as it provides a mix of technical and management skills together with a proactive problem-solving mindset.
The major driver for my specific career direction has been a deep belief that the two big (and related) challenges of my generation will be striving toward ecological sustainability and international development. I figure if you're going to dedicate a third of your waking hours to something you'd better believe in it- and if you love what you do the money usually sorts itself out.
