Interview with Matthew Brady, the Week 12 Winner

Matthew Brady’s winning idea, like many of the Make it so ideas, was inspired by the lack of energy efficiency in the home.

    His idea was:

“Make it so… after an oven is used the left over heat(energy) is used to help heat water for hot water systems.”

Here’s more about Matthew’s inspiration and his thoughts about engineering in general.

What was the inspiration behind your idea?

In my household hot water is a rare commodity, and as our oven is located close to our hot water system it seemed like a waste every time the water was cold and the oven still hot.

What do you think of the Make it so campaign?

I think it is a great way to get people thinking about engineering and its impact on society.

    How do you define engineering?

Engineering for me is about finding solutions to problems and then creating that solution.

What do you think is the biggest engineering feat of the last decade?

There has been some incredible advances in all areas of engineering, some that really standout for me are the Large Hadron Collider and the construction of the Hong Kong international airport, also I think that the developments in synthetic telepathy are amazing.

What would you most like to see made so by 2020?

I would love to see some large scale renewable energy projects in Australia. Also creation of harnessable cold fusion energy would be nice.
